The meetings of the Coordination Council are held twice a year. The objective of the February meeting was to discuss and approve the detailed report of the Foundation for 2016 and plans of activity for 2017.
The Coordination Council members have noticed the visible progress in implementation of the Foundation’s objectives and first of all of the High Conservation Value Forests Project (HCVF), the main project of the Foundation as well as the important role of Silver Taiga in sustainable forest management promotion not only in Komi but all over Russia.
In particular, the training courses on landscape-ecological forest use planning developed and conducted by Silver Taiga specialists were highly appreciated. The use of quadcopters during preparation of the courses was also approved by the Coordination Council. The pictures of the logging areas were taken at a height with the help of quadcopters and the participants of the courses, harvester and forwarder operators, at the first time could sum up the situation on the logging area, see the landscape, understand the results of their activity and take it into consideration during planning and conducting of loggings (see the pictures below).
The Coordination Council members suggested to make a training film about the importance of the landscape peculiarities considerations during forest use.
As for the Model River Mezen Project the Coordination Council members suggested to take into account the necessity of the control strengthening over poaching and illegal fishing before aiming the project efforts at an artificial reproduction of Mezen salmon or planting the Mezen River and its tributaries by the local fish population.
Besides, it was suggested to support Komi Model Forest Project and to develop contacts with the International Model Forest Network in spite of the fact that the project has no financing since 2008. According to the Coordination Council members, such cooperation form as Model Forest is very productive in meeting the Foundation’s objectives – sustainable development promotion and has a potential for the forest areas development.
