Gaining Revenge
Young Udora intellectuals intend to challenge the Model River Mezen project experts with another intellectual game.
The intellectual game based on the popular show What? Where? When? was held in the Central Library of the village of Koslan, Udora district, at the end of April, as part of the Model River Mezen project. The questions asked during the game were devoted to the Mezen ichthyofaunal, fishing tools, fishery rules, and Udora fishing traditions. Udora intellectuals competed with the members of the working group of the Model River Mezen project. The game included 17 questions, 5 of which were answered correctly by the team of intellectuals. The project working group team won, so the knowledgeable youngsters were disappointed, because in the discussion process some of them proposed the right answers, but as they were not confident enough, wrong answers were given at the end.
The team headed by Anna Ilyina, chairwoman of the union of Udora Harvesting, Mondi Syktyvkar, included 9 young people from Koslan, Blagoyevo, and Usogorsk. According to the Model River Mezen experts’ opinion, the game could have been won by the other team, if its members had been more confident and persistent about their views during the discussion. Finally, as the young intellectuals were not focused sufficiently, the result of the game was fatal for them.
A sport trainer from Usogorsk Children Activity Center Ivan Ignatov demonstrated excellent skills. He was pro-active in proposing various versions, encouraging his friends to play, so it was natural that the experts and viewers’ vote selected him as the best player. Both experts and viewers noted his being dynamic and knowledgeable. The best question asked was about the second name for the pike which is never used by fishermen. Karl Linney, who described the fish in 1758, called it a “wolf” in Latin, thus underlining its predatory nature. The team of intellectuals thought it was the burbot, but they were wrong. However, they appreciated the question as the most interesting one.
The Silver Taiga Foundation has been involved in various educational activities as part of its biodiversity protection projects in the Komi Republic since 2002. Education in such a natural form as intellectual game was used by the Foundation for the first time, but turned out to be successful. After the game, the Foundation got new supporters among the young people of Udora district.
