Forest Use Planning on Landscape Basis
Our website now has the new publication – Recommendations on the Landscape and Environmental Planning of the Forest Use with Account of the FSC Certification Requirements.
The Recommendations were prepared on the basis of long years of experience of Silver Taiga professionals with pilot catchment basins of forest rivers under the Ecosystem and Landscape Background for Forestry and FSC Planning project, which is one of the sections of the large-scale High Conservation Value Forests (HCVF) project driven by the Foundation since 2008 with Mondi Group’s financial support.
Field activities were held at pilot areas in Priluzye and Ust-Nem forestries. Forest survey and mapping materials, mainly Earth remote sensing data, were analyzed to assess environmental and vegetation features of landscapes, in addition to forest use analysis at pilot catchment areas in retrospect. At the same time, field data validation was implemented. The Recommendations were tested at FSC certified companies’ leased areas in Komi Model Forest.
The brochure describes methods of sustainable forestry and forest management planning under the landscape approach in line with the National forestry management FSC standard by means of GIS technology and Earth remote sensing data. The Recommendations can be considered as an algorithm for long-term forest use planning, reforestation and forest cultivation with account of landscape and environmental features of sites and up-to-date information about forests obtained through interpretation of space images and other spatial information about forest landscapes. The publication is intended for logging companies’ management and professionals, forestries, forest surveying and engineering companies, it can also be of interest for environmental organizations, scientists, students and forest stakeholders.
Even though these are purely regional recommendations, they can be used for adjacent areas with similar landscapes and forest types, primarily in Kirov and Arkhangelsk regions, while their methodological approach can be used anywhere in Russia.
The book has been published in 500 copies. You can order the printed version of the Recommendations (in Russian) in our office or via e-mail office@komimodelforest.ru.
