Finno-Ugric Youth Learned About the “Silver Taiga” Projects and Challenges in Forest and Fish Resources Management
The young employees of the Silver Taiga Foundation took part in the International Forum of the Finno-Ugric Youth “FUROR-2014” held in the last days of November in the ancient village Pomozdino of the Ust-Kilom district.
The forum has been organized by the Komi Youth Association “MI”, Ministry of National Policy of the Republic of Komi, International Advisory Committee of Finno-Ugric Peoples, Interregional Public Movement “Komi Voytyr”, MAFUN, administrations of the municipal district “Ust-Kulomsky”, and rural settlement “Pomozdino”.
The program of the forum was structured in such a way that its participants – 120 boys and girls, having arrived from different districts of Komi, other Finno-Ugric republics of Russia, and also from Finland and Estonia – not merely got the chance to talk in an informal environment and participate in various ethnocultural activities, but were also able to discuss serious problems relevant for their regions and countries. This was the focus of the work in three sections – “Fund raising and projects promotion”, “Preservation and development of the languages and traditional cultures of the Finno-Ugric peoples in the conditions of the modern society”, and “Ecology. Health. Future of indigenous peoples”.
The Silver Taiga ecologists Alexander Borovlyov and Nikolay Shilov have taken part in the work of the third section as experts and lead speakers. Since the issues related to the traditional environment conservation and sustainable forest and river resources management are vital for many Finno-Ugric peoples, the section participants were interested in the proposed presentation reports, based on the “Silver Taiga” project activity, – on the impact of forest harvesting on the aquatic ecosystems and fish resources management problems.
