The volunteers got informed about biodiversity
The second meeting of the volunteers took place on the 5th of July in the office of the Silver Taiga Foundation.
The reason for the meeting was an educational seminar organized by the Foundation ecologist Elena Popova. The topic “Biological diversity of the taiga forest of the Komi Republic” was selected for the first seminar. This was not a random choice because the main activities of the foundation are aimed at promotion of sustainable development of our region with conservation of pristine forest and natural diversity of our republic in general. Both familiar and new volunteers not indifferent to the deforestation problem of the republic responded to a meeting invitation. The presentation shown by Elena Popova proved the uniqueness of the region where we are living and revealed plenty of problems requiring immediate solution. The main specified problem was a negative impact of industrial harvesting to the natural diversity within certain territories. The audience also learned what biological diversity is, heard the information about some interesting species inhabiting the Komi Republic, compared an ecological situation in the forests of the Komi Republic and Scandinavian countries, and learned why logging causes reduction of biological diversity and how it’s possible to decrease a negative impact significantly.
Judging by the amount of various questions addressed to the Foundation specialist, the topic of the presentation turned out to be very interesting and relevant for the audience. It can be said with confidence that an outcome of the meeting was the volunteers’ decision to gather more often for such educational seminars helping to have a fresh look at the familiar problems.
