One More National Park in the Komi Republic
Representatives of Silver Taiga Foundation have investigated the territory of Koigorodok pristine forest massif which was reserved for National park in 2009 by Ministry of natural resources of Russia.
This only one preserved big massif of southern taiga is located mainly in Koigorodok forestry unit and also occupies part of south-east of Priluzje forestry unit and east of Letka forestry unit. Besides the potential National park borders with the Tulashor – Nurgush Reserve in Kirov region of Russia.
Representatives of Silver Taiga Foundation have visited the territory of potential National park three times. They have investigated ecological, landscape and vegetarian characteristics of the territory and have prepared materials for State ecological project expertise of the future National park.
The results of this work will be presented on www.silvertaiga.ru and www.undp-komi.org. This was the first complex investigation of the given territory. It has proved its high ecological and international environmental value.
According to the participants of the investigation the main value of the given territory is the preserved natural forest dynamics on a huge area. This territory is unique and the only one in the European southern taiga which has a high natural level of biodiversity of species, ecosystems and landscapes.
The conducted investigation will help also to explain land-use planning of the future National park and propose important elements of the territory management.
The work has been done under UNDP-GEF project «Strengthening Protected Area System of the Komi Republic to Conserve Virgin Forest Biodiversity in the Pechora River Headwaters Region».
