Revelation of Biologically Valuable Forests
On June 5, 2009 a final workshop dedicated to Russian-Sweden project «Elaboration of revelation and investigation strategy of high biological value in south taiga zone» was held in St. Petersburg State Forestry Academy. The project realization period is spring 2006 – spring 2009. The project is managed by Pro Natura Fund and Baltic Fund for Nature.
The participants of the workshop made presentations about forest conservation in Karelia, Leningrad, Novgorod and Pskov regions. Besides different questions concerning the project realization were discussed during the workshop. Silver Taiga representatives presented the experience of Komi concerning the practical use of strategy of revelation and ecological estimation of pristine forests and the decision making process with regard to these forests.
Moreover the first booklet dedicated to revelation and investigation of biologically valuable forests in the North-West of the European part of Russia was presented. The booklet is written in the Russian language. It consists of two parts: Part 1. «Strategy of revelation and mapping» and Part 2. «Revelation of species used during investigation in the level of stands».
Project aim is a long term contribution to biodiversity conservation in North-West of Russia by elaboration of a scientifically proved strategy of revelation, investigation and mapping of valuable forest area.
The booklet was written by a great number of specialists. As for Silver Taiga representatives Alexander Mariev and Dmitry Kutepov and a Swedish specialist Leif Anderson they were responsible for the article about forest dynamics.
The given booklet helps to reveal biologically valuable forests during planning of new valuable forest areas, zoning, forest certification etc. The booklet material can also be used in the educational purposes.
