HCVF International Workshop in Syktyvkar

On April 1-2, 2009 an international workshop concerning High Conservation Value Forests (HCVF or pristine forests) in the European North of Russia was held in Syktyvkar. The attention was focused on HCVF conservation and sustainable use.

The workshop was organized by:

HCVR Network (an international NGO dealing with HCVF conservation and management)
Silver Taiga Foundation

Workshop’s goal:

New position building of the environmental NGOs with regard to the pristine forests in the European North of Russia.

Workshop’s objectives:

• Information exchange and discussion of the current situation with pristine forests conservation and felling in the European North of Russia.
• Learning the world experience of HCVF conservation and sustainable use.
• Presentation of the discussion results to the main forest stakeholders in the Komi Republic.

The workshop consisted of two parts:

April, 1 – the representatives of the Russian and international environmental NGOs discussed the current situation concerning HCVF in Karelia, Archangelsk and Komi. The main attention was paid to the large low disturbed forest areas and pristine forests. Besides HCVR Network experience all over the world and the experience of HCVF conservation and management in Canada, Bulgaria and South African Republic was presented during the workshop.
