Forest Use Quality will be Estimated by Radar Remote Sensing Method
In October – November 2010 the representatives of Silver Taiga Foundation have gathered field materials on the territory of Komi Model Forest for the «Ecosystem and landscape background of forestry and FSC certification planning» project under cooperation with European Space Agency (ESA), Mondi Group and FSC International.
This pilot project is going to use the method of radar remote sensing of earth from the space to estimate forest use on the certified forest territories. The given method helps to increase the level of efficiency of ecosystem and landscape characteristics of forest areas needed for forestry planning and estimation of forest use results.
Under the given project ESA presents the method of space images analysis and the images themselves, Mondi Group – its leasing area in Priluzje forestry unit, Silver Taiga Foundation provides the gathering and analysis of field materials needed for interpretation of space images and also discovers the local needs and expectations with relation to certification. Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) acts as a customer of the project. The project results will be available for all interested forest stakeholders.
