Baltic Landscapes
Full title is “Baltic Landscape in change – innovative approaches towards sustainable forested landscapes”. It is international project dealing with problems of adaptation of forested landscapes to new challenges like globalization, increased number of user in the landscape, parallel demands for more intensive use and more protection for the nature, climate change, need of implementation of international conventions. Project partners agreed to use ModelForest concept, proved as good platform to solve problems concerning many partners. The concept is planned to be used on the landscape level and the model sites are called Baltic Landscapes. The project is planned as long-term, for 12 years, with main goal to foster good governance in the forested landscapes. The project has 4 main directions:
- Establishment of a network of 8 Baltic Landscapes in 4 countries based on Model Forest concept,
- Development of new approaches to integrated landscape planning,
- Balancing different values in the landscape
- Catchment-based governance and management of rivers.
Seven countries and 15 partners participate in the project. Baltic Landscapes will be established in Belarus, Finland,Poland and Sweden. Other countries – Estonia, Latvia and Norway – are planning dissemination of the project results. Russian Model Forests: Komi MF, Kovdozerski MF and Pskov MF are planned to be active guests, due to fact that Russia and EC have not prolonged cooperation agreement. Funding for the project, 3 300 000 Euro, has been approved by Baltic Sea Program – Interreg, for for the period of Oct 2011 – Mar 2014. Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Department of Forest Resource Management in Umea is Lead Partner of the project. Silver Taiga has participated actively in the project development using experience gathered in the Komi MF.

Inventorying the Biological Diversity of the SPNA in the Udora District of the Komi Republic and Identifying the Prospective Udora District Areas to Be Included in the SPNA
Inventorying the biological diversity of the complex reserves in the Udora district of the Komi Republic was conducted in the framework of the agreement between the Komi Regional Non-profit Foundation “Silver Taiga” (Executor) and Institute of Biology of the Komi Scientific Center, Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Customer) dd. May 16, 2011. The executor’s objectives included:
- Analysis of the literature and archival data on the biological diversity of the specially protected natural areas of republican significance in the Udora district of the Komi Republic (complex reserves “Ezhugsky”, “Sodzimsky”, and “Pyssa” ), and availability of potential areas and objects to be included in the SNPA of the Komi Republic.
- Determining the gaps in the available information on the biological diversity of the specially protected natural areas of republican significance in the Udora district of the Komi Republic and the need for integrated and/or specialized field research works on the inventorying the biodiversity of these reserves withing the framework of the project.
- Organization and performance of the integrated research works on inventorying the species biological diversity of the KR SPNA of regional significance, located in the Udora district of the Komi Republic.
- Organizing and conducting the field exploratory works to identify the prospective primary forest areas and other objects and natural complexes to be included in the system of the Komi Republic’s SPNA system. Demarcation and description of the proposed boundaries of these territories in the Udora district of the Komi Republic.
- Determining the level of anthropogenic disturbance and representativeness of the ecosystems, vegetation types, and habitats on the SPNA in the Udora district of the Komi Republic. Preparation of the proposals on the feasibility of the continued functioning of the existing SPNA, change of their category (profile), change of borders, SPNA zoning.
- Determining the key biodiversity elements of the SPNA in the Udora district of the Komi Republic for their protection and identifying the conservation objects; mapping and defining the key biodiversity elements’ status; determining the coordinates of the habitats (places of growth) of the key species using a GPS navigator and their mapping within the SPNA boundaries, established in the course of the inventory works; identifying and setting the priorities among the gaps in the ecological representativeness.
- Developing the proposals on the organization of a long-term SPNA monitoring in the Udora district of the Komi Republic.
- Justification of the proposals to organize new SPNA in the Udora district of the Komi Republic, based on the field works results.

Developing the Komi Regional Risk Assessment for FSC Controlled Wood
The Russian National Office of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in cooperation with the Komi Regional Non-Profit Foundation “Silver Taiga” is starting the implementation of the project on the development of the Komi regional risk assessment for FSC controlled wood. The purpose of the project is to develop the Komi regional risk assessment with its further integration into the National risk assessment, which is approved by the International FSC center.
It will be recalled that in September 2012, the Technical Committee of the National Working group finalized the work on the project of the National risk assessment for the controlled wood (click here for details). However, in order to reflect the specific features of the Russian regions, the idea to create own assessments in some regions with their further integration into the national one was born. In the Komi Republic the certification process has been continuing for almost ten years. A considerable experience has been gained here, there are a lot of certified companies, and cooperation between the stakeholders is established. Therefore, Komi has every chance to develop a good regional risk assessment tool for controlled wood, which will facilitate an efficient control of its supply carried out by the companies.
