The project on regional risk assessment for FSC controlled wood launched
The Russian national office of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) jointly with the Silver Taiga Foundation is starting the implementation of the project on development of the Komi regional risk assessment for FSC controlled wood.
The target of the project is to develop the Komi regional risk assessment with its further integration into the National risk assessment, which is approved by the International FSC center.
It will be recalled that in September this year Technical Committee of the National Working group finalized the work on the project of National risk assessment for the controlled wood (see the details here). But in order to reflect the specific features of the Russian regions an idea to create own assessments in some regions with their further integration into the national one was born. In the Komi Republic the certification process has been continuing for almost ten years, a considerable experience has been gained here, there are a lot of certified companies; cooperation between the stakeholders is established. Therefore, Komi has every chance to develop a good regional tool for risk assessment for controlled wood, which will facilitate an efficient control of its supply carried out by the companies.
Consequently, a regional working group on development of the regional risk assessment for the republic is in process of establishment in Komi. Group members will be approved by the Technical Committee of the National Working group. Pursuant to the rules of the Forest Stewardship Council development of any national and regional FSC standards is executed based on the observance of balance between three groups of interests – economical, environmental, and social. This balance is assured by means of equal participation of the representatives of three different groups of interests in the working groups on the standards creation.
On October 25thof 2012 the first meeting of the republican stakeholders will be held in Syktyvkar in the office of the Silver Taiga Foundation. The target of the meeting will be familiarization of the participants with the procedures, rules, and requirements of FSC to the development of the risk assessment for controlled wood, working group formation, and planning of the further project work.
Representatives of the regional forest sector companies, state forest administration bodies, non-governmental environmental and social organizations, indigenous people communities, scientific institutes and others are invited to participate in the meeting.
